They will sometimes not work properly when the outermost pen hole on a gear is too close to the edge. The washer will bump up against the ring and deflect the path of the gear. Definitely not the desired effect.

Also, it is sometimes better to turn the washer pair so the smaller washer is on the bottom. This provides better clearance to avoid the problem mentioned above.

Sometimes the washer work very well, sometimes not so much. Not a 100% fix for the problem but another tool to keep on hand for when it’s useful.
